Artist:Kelly Price
Song:Someday
Album:Priceless
Kelly Price is a fabulous singer songwriter but is she R & B or gospel? I don't really care but if you ask Kelly, she's always been a gospel singer despite her R & B success. Kelly was born Apr. 4, 1973 in Queens, NY. Not surprisingly. her dad is a pastor and she grew up singing in his church. She surfaced in the early 90s as a backup singer and was featured on some rap songs by Nototious BIG, Nas & Sean Combs. But Kelly has admitted that her obesity made it difficult for her to get a record contract despite her obvious talent. She was going to quit performing when the legendary Ronnie Isley got her a contract with Polygram's DefSoul label. Her 1997 debut Soul Of A Woman did well but things seemed to sour when MCA purchased Polygram and moved Kelly to DefJam. Meanwhile Kelly saw herself in a music video and lost a hundred pounds. This didn't seem to help with her record company. In fact, the 2003 CD Priceless was delayed for a year due to bickering over the album cover. Kelly wrote this song Someday with producer Warryn "Babydub" Campbell. He's best known for his work with gospel sisters Mary Mary. It's a great autobiographical song. I would classify it as gospel but you can check out this wonderful video for yourself. Though I have always considered Kelly Price a gospel singer, now it's official with her latest CD This Is Who I Am on Zomba Gospel. I look forward to more great music from Kelly Price.
