Here's the match video of Priscila Cachoeira vs Gina Mazany from last night's UFC show in Houston. This fight is at Flyweight. This is a fight that changed direction because of a very poor call by ref Mike Beltran. Priscila is a teammate of Jessica Andrade at PRVT in Brazil. Fans may recall that she was brought in as a short notice victim...er...opponent for Valentina Shevchenko in Brazil. She got beat so bad she needed knee surgery. Since then she has been on the comeback trail with mixed success. She's a striker with no ground game. After a 1-3 record as a Bantamweight, Gina returned to the UFC last year as a Flyweight and won her first fight. She then announced her engagement to UFC fighter Tim Elliott. They moved to his home town of Kansas City to train with James Krause of Glory MMA. Gina's strategy was to take Priscila down and keep her there. She did this in round one and round two. Halfway through round two, Beltran stood them up. Of course he would defend this by saying that he warned Gina. But it's not like Gina was just laying on her. She was trying to advance her position but Priscila was defending well. It was a poor call and the fight changed because Priscila is much better on her feet and Gina got tired. So Priscila won by TKO. Stand ups are a judgement call and refs are inconsistent in enforcing it. We have seen at times fighters who should be stood up but the ref won't do it. And then there are times like this where Beltran really jumped the gun. He's a veteran ref and he should know better. And it doesn't help Priscila. It was a gift. Check out the video for yourself.
