Artist:Nancy Martinez
Song:For Tonight
Album:Freestyle's Greatest Hits
Nancy Martinez had her greatest success when the 1986 single For Tonight was a big dance club hit and crossed over to pop. She was born Aug. 26, 1960 in Quebec City but she grew up in Montreal. She studied piano as a child and got into acting and singing in high school. After releasing a couple of singles first as Jade and then Nancy Martin, she released the 1983 album Lay It Down on the Montreal based dance music label Matra. The 1984 single Sunshine Reggae was a dance hit locally. When the 1986 single For Tonight was a dance club hit, Atlantic Records picked up the album Not Just the Girl Next Door for distribution. For Tonight reached #2 on the dance chart and #32 on the Billboard Hot 100. I recall the video was played a lot on MuchMusic in Canada to fill Canadian Content quotas. It did OK. A couple of songs from the album charted. The album was produced by Mateen Ali. For Tonight was written by Dino Pacifici and Phil George. Ali and Pacifici are veterans of the Montreal dance music scene. The album is available as a digital download. You can get For Tonight on this various artists comp. For the 1989 album Unpredictable, Nancy moved to A&M distributed Vendetta Records. Ali produced this album too. After that she returned to recording for local labels in Montreal. She has recorded in English and French. Though Nancy has recorded occasionally including a jazz album in 2004, today she is mainly a background singer and occasional guest vocalist on dance music. Here's the video of For Tonight by Nancy Martinez.
