AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Joshua Redman

Artist:Joshua Redman

Song:Soul Dance

Album:Wish

Sax player Joshua Redman is one of today's top jazz musicians. He has recorded as a leader since the early 90s. The 1993 album Wish is an early album. He was born Feb. 1, 1969 in Berkeley, CA. His grand uncle was sax player Don Redman. His father was sax player Dewey Redman. His main influences are John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. His dad played with Coleman. After playing sax in his high school band, Redman earned a degree in Social Studies at Harvard. He thought about going to Yale Law School. But instead he moved to New York and immediately got into the jazz club scene. After winning the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition, Redman signed with Warner Bros. and released his debut album Joshua Redman in 1993. The unusual thing about Redman is he will celebrate his 30th anniversary with Warner Bros. in 2023. He currently records for Warner's Nonesuch label. Soul Dance is from the 1993 album Wish. It was his second album. Musicians are Pat Metheny on guitar, Charlie Haden on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Redman wrote Soul Dance but Metheny and Haden also wrote songs for the album. Soul Dance also appears on the 2014 album Trios Live with Reuben Rogers on bass and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Redman has recorded and toured regularly since the 90s. Though he has formed specific bands in the past like Elastic Band and James Farm. And he sat in frequently with Umphrey's McGee, the guy he has worked with most frequently is pianist Brad Mehldau. His 2020 album RoundAgain is with Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade. Here's Joshua Redman with Matt Penman on bass and Gregory Hutchinson on drums performing Soul Dance at the 2010 Tokyo Jazz Festival.
