Artist:The Videos
Song:Trickle, Trickle
Album:Spotlite on Mainline & Casino Records Vol. 1
The doo wop group The Videos only recorded a couple of singles. The 1958 single Trickle, Trickle has become a classic because The Manhattan Transfer covered it in 1979 and made sure we knew who originally recorded it. The Videos were from Jamaica, Queens, NY. Ronald Cuffey and Clarence Bassett were in the doo wop group The Five Sharps. They scored a hit with a 1952 cover of Stormy Weather on Jubilee Records. They disbanded after two members went into the military. Cuffey and Bassett formed The Videos in 1958 with Charles Baskerville, Johnny Jackson and Ron Woodhall. They signed with Casino Records and Trickle, Trickle became a regional hit mostly through the efforts of legendary DJ Douglas "Jocko" Henderson, host of Jocko's Rocket Ship on stations in New York and Philadelphia. He was also co-owner of Casino and its sister label Mainline with Barry Golder. So he was getting paid. The Videos recorded one more single and then Cuffey and Woodhall died and Bassett disbanded the Videos. You can get two The Videos songs on this Collectables CD. Trickle, Trickle turned out to be a very memorable song after The Manhattan Transfer covered it in 1979. Bassett and Baskerville went on to form Shep and the Limelites with James Shepherd and they scored a huge hit with Daddy's Home in 1960. Bassett was also in the late 60s version of The Flamingos and the 70s group Creative Funk. He died in 2005. Baskerville went on to join The Drifters. He died in 1995. Here's a video for Trickle, Trickle by The Videos. Thanks to the Doo Wop blog for The Videos bio.
