AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Fatoumata Diawara

Artist:Fatoumata Diawara

Song:Bissa

Album:Fatou

Malian singer songwriter actress Fatoumata Diawara made a big splash when her 2011 album Fatou was released on Nick Gold's World Circuit label with Warner distribution. She even got a Grammy nomination. She still records occasionally but she has a busy acting career. She was born in Ivory Coast in 1982, Her parents are from Mali. She was raised in Bamako by an aunt. At age 18, Fatoumata moved to France to pursue an acting career. She has appeared on stage and in films since 1999. Her most high profile film was the 2014 film Timbuktu which won seven Cesar awards and a Best Foreign Film Oscar nomination. Meanwhile she was appearing and recording with Dee Dee Bridgewater, the African supergroup AfroCubism and on Herbie Hancock's 2010 album The Imagine Project. AfroCubism was on World Circuit so label owner Nick Gold spotted her and signed her. After releasing an EP, the 2011 album Fatou was released. Fatoumata wrote and produced all the songs. Special guests included Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, African drumming legend Tony Allen and Mali music legend Toumani Diabate. She toured to support the album and it was nominated for a Grammy. Fatoumata continues to appear in films. She recorded a live album with Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca in 2014 on Jazz Village. And she has recorded two albums for the British label Wagram. I think her film career keeps her busy so she may not have the time for music. Fans of Malian music should check her out. Here's the video for Bissa by Fatoumata Diawara.
