Artist:St. Paul & the Broken Bones
Song:Call Me
Album:Half the City
Neo soul fans will want to check out St. Paul & the Broken Bones. I would describe them as a blue eyed soul band very similar to The Dap-Tones. They are from Birmingham, AL. Lead singer Paul Janeway and bassist Jesse Phillips were in the band The Secret Danger. They weren't getting anywhere and they were going to record one final album before quitting the music business and getting real jobs. But something clicked and they decided to release a 2012 EP as St. Paul & the Broken Bones. It was blue eyed soul based on Janeway's vocals. It got enough buzz that Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes signed them to his label Single Lock. He produced the 2014 album Half the City. Call Me was the first single. It reached #6 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart. They appeared on CBS This Morning and Late Night with David Letterman. Veteran session keyboard player Al Gamble was brought in to help with the arrangements. Since then St. Paul & the Broken Bones have signed with the much larger label RECORDS, LLC with Sony distribution. Their latest album was released in 2018. The band continues to have success in the Adult Alternative market. Here's the video for Call Me by St. Paul & the Broken Bones.
