Highway 101 was one of the hottest country groups of the late 80s. They had a string of country hits including Whiskey, If You Were A Woman. The lead singer of Highway 101 was Paulette Carlson. She was born Oct. 1952 in Moose Lake, MN. After moving to Nashville, she was a staff songwriter for The Oak Ridge Boys and she recorded three singles for RCA. She moved to Los Angeles and her manager decided to assemble Highway 101 with veteran session musicians Jack Daniels on guitar, Curtis Stone on bass and Scott "Cactus" Moser on drums. They were the bar band in the 1986 film Back To School. Highway 101 signed with Warner Bros. and released the 1987 album Highway 101. The first single The Bed You Made For Me reached #4 on the Country Singles chart and then Whiskey, If You Were A Woman reached #2. They had four hit singles from that album which was certified Gold. The album was produced by Warners house producer Paul Worley. Whiskey, If You Were A Woman was written by veteran songwriters Bob Morrison and Johnny MacRae along with Mary W. Francis. Highway 101 recorded three albums for Warner Bros. They had four #1 country hits. You can get all their hits on this comp. Paulette left in 1990 and signed a solo deal with Capitol. They dropped her after one unsuccessful album. Nikki Nelson replaced her in Highway 101. After an album on Warners and one on Liberty, the band was without a record deal. Paulette returned in 1996 for the album Reunited on Intersound. After that Stone and Moser led a version of Highway 101 until Moser was seriously injured in a 2012 motorcycle crash and had his leg amputated. He is married to Wynona Judd. Paulette Carlson formed a new band. She continues to tour but she last recorded in 2006. Here's Highway 101 performing Whiskey, If You Were A Woman on Nashville Now 1987.
