Fonseca studied music at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota and then Berklee in Boston. His band Baroja played clubs in Bogota. After self releasing an album, Fonseca signed with EMI in 2002. His debut CD did well in Colombia He was compared favorably with Juanes and Shakira. He toured with Shakira. But with his 2006 album and the single Te Mando Flores, Fonseca broke through to a much larger Latin American audience. Te Mando Flores not only topped the Colombian charts but it also topped the US Latin chart. And he won a Latin Grammy for Te Mando Flores. Fonseca usually writes and produces all his own music.
