James Blake is an award winning singer, songwriter and producer. His music is electronic music with blue eyed soul elements. Though he has had some chart success in his native England, he is also a very busy producer and that's where he is really making his mark. He was born James Blake Litherland Sept. 26, 1988 in London. His father is guitarist James Litherland of the progressive rock group Colosseum. After they disbanded, he became a session musician. Blake studied classical piano as a child. While attending school, he and his friends got interested in electronic music, especially what is known in England as dubstep. After some of Blake's early EPs got the attention of influential BBC DJs like Gilles Peterson and Nick Grimshaw, Blake got a record deal with Polydor in England and Republic in the US. His 2011 debut album James Blake did well in England. Retrograde is from Blake's 2013 album Overgrown which was his first release in the US. Before that, Blake spent time in the US with admirers Kanye West and Justin "Bon Iver" Vernon. Overgrown won the 2013 Mercury Prize. Blake has released four albums most recently in 2019. He has become a very successful producer working with Vince Staples, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z and Bon Iver. He also appeared on the soundtrack of the 2018 film Black Panther.
