Dana "Queen Latifah" Owens started out as a pioneering female rapper. But by the time she appeared in the 2007 musical film Hairspray, she wasn't rapping much anymore. And when she did record, it was as a jazz singer. Though she returned to rap in 2009, Dana is mainly an actress. She was born Mar. 18, 1970 in Newark, NJ and she grew up in East Orange. In high school she played basketball and appeared in school plays. She got into rap as a member of Flavor Unit and then signed with Tommy Boy. But even while she was having success as a rapper, Dana was getting into acting. She starred in the Fox sitcom Living Single from 1993-98 and she hosted The Queen Latifah Show from 1999-2001. Her film breakthrough was playing Matron "Mama" Morton in the 2002 musical Chicago. She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. This led to success in the 2003 film Bringing Down The House and other film appearances. Dana's other big role was in the 2007 musical Hairspray. as Maybelle "Motormouth" Stubbs. Big, Bad and Beautiful was her big song in the film. Dana continues to appear in films and on TV. She has also produced several films. Most recently she played Hattie McDaniel in the Netflix series Hollywood. She was also executive producer of the Lifetime film The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel. She is currently working on a revival of the TV series The Equalizer for Universal and CBS. She will executive produce and star with Chris Noth. Dana last recorded in 2009.
