Song:Howlin' For Judy
Album:The Blue Series Sampler II
Flutist Jeremy Steig was a jazz rock pioneer. There was renewed interest in his music when Howlin' For Judy was sampled on the 1994 Beastie Boys hit Sure Shot. He has been sampled frequently since then. He was born Sept. 23, 1942 in New York City. His father was New Yorker cartoonist William Steig. Jeremy was an artist too and he designed his own album covers. Steig started playing recorder as a child and he started taking flute lessons. After attending New York's High School of Music and Art, Steig toured with Richie Havens and Tim Hardin and he also played with Paul Bley and Gary Peacock. He also recorded the 1963 album Flute Fever for Columbia. After backing up Hardin, Steig's jazz rock group Jeremy & The Satyrs released a 1968 album on Reprise. Pianist Warren Bernhardt and bassist Eddie Gomez were in that band. Of course Gomez was best known as the bassist for piano legend Bill Evans. Gomez recommended Steig to Evans and they recorded an album that I featured on the blog a few years ago. Then Steig recorded two albums for Sonny Lester's Solid State label. Howlin' For Judy is from the 1970 album Legwork. Musicians are Eddie Gomez on bass and Don Alias on drums. As I said, the Beastie Boys sampling led to renewed interest in Steig's music. Blue Note releases a lot of CDs of songs sampled by hip hop guys and this one is available as a budget CDs. After Solid State was taken over by Blue Note, Steig recorded albums for Blue Note and Capitol. Steig also recorded for Columbia, Enja, CTI and the German label CMP. Gomez was on most of these albums. And they continued to record together after they started their own label in 2003. Steig married a Japanese woman so they lived in Japan until he died from cancer on Apr. 13, 2016 at age 73. The sampling of Howlin' For Judy was a big deal as his wife still gets royalty cheques. Here's a video for Howlin' For Judy by Jeremy Steig.
