AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Hadley Caliman

Artist:Hadley Caliman
Song:Cigar Eddie
Album:Hadley Caliman

Sax player Hadley Caliman was a sideman and educator. He is probably best known for appearing on the 1972 Santana album Caravanserai. I would describe his music as soul jazz. He was born Dec. 31, 1949 in Idabel, OK. He moved to Los Angeles with his father and attended Jefferson High School. He saw Johnny Griffin playing with Duke Ellington and decided to play the sax. Art Farmer was one of his teachers along with Dexter Gordon. In the late 60s Caliman was a member of The Gerald Wilson Orchestra. He was also in tuba player Ray Draper's jazz rock band Red Beans and Rice. He also appeared on albums by Bobby Bryant, Phil Moore III, Don Ellis and Mongo Santamaria. An appearance on a 1971 album by guitarist John White got Caliman a record deal with Bob Shad's Mainstream label. White appeared on the 1971 album Hadley Caliman with Larry Vuckovich on piano, Bill Douglass on bass and Clarence Becton on drums. Cigar Eddie was released as a single. Carlos Santana heard it and invited Caliman to join Santana. At the time he was turning Santana into a jazz fusion band. Caliman appears on the 1972 album Caravanserai. He also toured with Santana and he appears on the 1972 album Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles Live!. Caliman also appeared on albums by Malo and Santana member Jose "Chepito" Areas. He recorded a second album for Mainstream and two for Catalyst. Then he moved to Seattle to raise his family and he joined the faculty of Cornish College of the Arts. After his 2003 retirement, Caliman recorded three albums for Origin Records. He died of liver cancer on Sept. 10, 2010 at age 78. Boplicity has released Hadley Caliman on CD and I recommend it to soul jazz fans. Here's a video for Cigar Eddie by Hadley Caliman.
