Major Lazer have been very successful on the dance charts. They have occasionally crossed over to pop. Lean On was a top five pop hit in 2015. The leader of Major Lazer is Thomas Wesley "Diplo" Pentz. He was born Nov. 10, 1978 in Tupelo, MS. He started DJing while attending the University of Central Florida. He first came to prominence working with rapper M.I.A. And through her he met David "Switch" Taylor. They formed Major Lazer and released the 2009 album Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do. Taylor left in 2011 and was replaced by Christopher "Jillionaire" Leacock and Leighton Paul "Walshy Fire" Walsh. They released the 2012 album Free the Universe. They also produced Rita Ora and No Doubt. Lean On was the first single from the 2015 album Peace Is The Mission. It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Pentz says he offered the song to Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. But he was very happy with Danish singer Karen Marie "MO" Orsted. The music was written by German producer Philip "Jr Blender" Meckseper and and Orsted wrote the lyrics and along with William "DJ Snake" Grigahcine rewrote the song. Major Lazer's other big hit was the 2016 single Cool Water featuring Justin Bieber and Orsted. It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Leacock left Major Lazer last year and was replaced by Eric "Ape Drums" Alberto-Lopez. Their new album Lazerism is due to be released this month. Wentz said in an interview that he has so many projects on the go that this could be the final Major Lazer album. Of course he may have changed his mind by now.
