Junior Wells was one of the all time greats of blues harmonica. He's also known for his long association with legendary guitarist Buddy Guy. He was born Amos Blackmore Dec. 9, 1934 in Memphis. As a child, he was a protege of Little Junior Parker and moved to Chicago at age 12. He replaced Little Walter in Muddy Waters' band in 1952. He recorded as a solo artist on the side. This version of Sonny Boy Williamson's My Little Schoolgirl is from the classic 1965 album Hoodoo Man Blues on Delmark Records. Musicians include Buddy Guy on guitar, Jack Myers on bass and Billy Warren on drums. It's a killer recording. This Blues Masters comp is part of a great series of Rhino various artists comps but the original is a must. Junior Wells continued to tour and record into the 90s, most frequently with Buddy Guy. He was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 1997. He suffered a heart attack during treatment, went into a coma and died on Jan. 15, 1998 at age 63. Here's Junior wells performing Cryin' Shame with Buddy Guy from the 1970 film Chicago Blues.
