Album:Proud Mary:The Best Of Ike & Tina Turner

Ike Turner & The Kings Of Rhythm were already a significant force on the St. Louis R & B scene when in 1956, he offered a teenager named Anna Mae Bullock an opportunity to sing in his band. He kept putting her off and then one night she just grabbed the mike and he hired her and changed her name to Tina. They were married in 1958. In 1959, Ike went into the studio to record A Fool In Love. The male vocalist didn't show so Tina sang the song and it was a top ten R & B hit. Ike & Tina Turner continued to have some hits but part of the problem was they bounced around various small record labels so it was hard to have consistency. This continued through the 60s until they toured with the Rolling Stones in 1969. Their performances on that tour earned them a contract with United Artists. Ike & Tina had their biggest success with this cover of John Fogerty's Proud Mary. They were always a strong live act with Tina's combination of ferocity and sex appeal. They petered out in the mid 70s mainly because of Ike's drug addiction and abuse of Tina. Tina had a lot of pop success in the 80s but Ike continued to have drug problems and spent time in jail. He does record occasionally, most recently the 2006 CD Risin' With The Blues. This comp on EMI covers some of Ike & Tina's early recordings on Sue Records and their records on United Artists. Some of their other material could be tougher to find. Here's Ike & Tina Turner performing Come Together & Proud Mary in 1969.
