Donny Hathaway is one of the most phenomenal performers in the history of pop music. Unfortunately he's probably best known for his tragic suicide on Jan. 13, 1979 at age 33. R & B fans still love and respect Donny. So when Rhino released These Songs For You, LIVE! in 2004, it was a real blast from a glorious past. Two Hathaway live albums had been previously released. Live in 1972 & In Performance in 1980. Compilation producers Dave Nathan & Barry Benson combined those two albums, added some unreleased live tracks and the result is one of the most dynamic performers ever at his peak. The Ghetto is one of his greatest songs and closes the album with a twelve minute extended jam. The audience goes nuts. Atlantic has also released The Donny Hathaway Collection comp of his studio recordings but These Songs For You, LIVE! is essential for R & B fans and justifies Donny's well deserved legendary status.
