Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Archie Shepp

Song:Mama Too Tight

Album:The Impulse Story:Archie Shepp

Jazz sax player Archie Shepp has an interesting background for a jazz musician. He earned a degree in dramatic literature at Goddard College in 1959. He started out in piano legend Cecil Taylor's band but by 1963 was making his own records for Impulse. Many of his recordings from that period included poetry readings usually of a political nature. This comp is probably a very good introduction to his music. 1966's Mama Too Tight has an exuberant R & B feel. Musicians include frequent collaborator trombonist Roswell Rudd, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Charlie Haden on bass & Beaver Harris on drums. Shepp would become an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts in 1978. He still tours and records occasionally but his 60s Impulse recordings are his best and a good place to start.
