Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Buffalo Springfield

Song:For What It's Worth

Album:Retrospective:The Best Of Buffalo Springfield

For a group that only made three albums and was only around a couple of years, Buffalo Springfield had a major influence on the folk rock sound of the late 60s. The story goes that Stephen Stills & Richie Furay were driving down Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles when Stills spotted a hearse that he knew was owned by Canadian Neil Young. Bassist Bruce Palmer was a passenger in the hearse and Dillards drummer Dewey Martin rounded out the group. They hit a home run with their first single For What Its Worth hitting #7 on the Billboard Singles Chart. This Stephen Stills song has become a counterculture anthem over the years. Stills wrote the song in the aftermath of the infamous Sunset Strip riots of 1966 and it's one of the best "protest" songs of the era. There was renewed interest in the song when rap group Public Enemy sampled it for He Got Game in 1998. Buffalo Springfield didn't last long mainly because Stills & Young didn't get along. That they went on to be part of the popular group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is somewhat ironic. Both have had significant solo careers too. Furay went on to form the group Poco and has had other groups too. This Retrospective comp was originally released in 1969 and should be perfect for most listeners. Believe it or not, Rhino issued a 4CD box set in 2001, pretty funny for a group that only made three albums.
