Yahoo LAUNCHCAST song of the day

Artist:Isaac Hayes

Song:Theme From Shaft

Album:The Best Of Isaac Hayes Vol. 1

These days Isaac Hayes is probably best known for this song and his character on South Park but he was a key figure in development of soul music and The Stax Sound in particular. Before he ever recorded his first solo record in 1967, Hayes and partner David Porter wrote and produced hits for Stax artists like Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas & Johnnie Taylor. His 1969 album Hot Buttered Soul was a hit. But Hayes hit a home run with his score for the film Shaft. Not only was Theme From Shaft a number one hit but Hayes won Best Score & Best Song Oscars. Then he got into acting. Well, he looked like a tough guy. He left Stax in 1975 in a dispute over royalties and has never had the success as a recording artist ever since. Despite his higher profile from South Park, he hasn't recorded anything new sibce 1995. This comp is reasonable but the 2005 2CD/1DVD comp The Ultimate Isaac Hayes:Can You Dig It is more complete. Shaft was a milestone film and Isaac Hayes was a big part of it and was also a big part of soul music of the 60s.
