Artist:James Brown
Song:Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, Part. 1
Album:20 All Time Greatest Hits
Papa's Got A Brand New Bag was James Brown's first top ten pop hit in 1965. It signaled a complete change from more traditional R & B into what would eventually be called funk. It didn't have a name at the time. It came at the end of a long legal battle with King Records owner Syd Nathan. Of course most James Brown fans agree that the 1963 Live At The Apollo is one of his greatest recordings. But Nathan didn't want to release it. He didn't think it would sell. Brown went and recorded Out Of Sight for Smash Records in 1964. Nathan sued him and Brown wasn't able to release any vocal recordings for over a year. This resulted in a new contract with King that gave him a lot more artistic control. Papa's Got A Brand New Bag was the first single and Brown's breakthrough to a pop audience. There was no album. King took two versions of the song along with some previously released material and issued a makeshift LP. But you can get the song on plenty of comps including this one which is a perfect introduction to newcomers. Everybody needs some James Brown. Here's James Brown performing Papa's Got A brand New Bag on Shindig in 1965.
