Artist:Derek & The Dominos
Song:Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?
Album:Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs
Derek & The Dominos was a shortlived supergroup put together by former Cream guitarist Eric Clapton in 1970. The Layla album is probably Clapton's greatest achievement. Clapton formed the group with former members of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. There was keyboardist vocalist Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle & drummer Jim Gordon. The group toured England first and then recorded Layla in the summer of 1970. Legendary guitarist Duane Allman joined the recording session. I'm not a big Clapton fan because though he has respect for great musicians, he sometimes has too much respect and doesn't take risks with his music. Allman was just the opposite and forces Clapton to heights that he would never reach again. Whitlock was also useful because he wrote & sang a lot of the songs with Clapton including Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad. Derek & The Dominos were supposed to record a follow up in May 1971 but Clapton was having drug problems and they split up. Of course Allman died in Oct. 1971. The Layla album has grown in stature over the years and is a must for anyone's CD collection. Here's Derek & The Dominos performing It's Too Late on the Johnny Cash Show with Cash & Carl Perkins. Keep in mind that Allman never toured with them.
