Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Dizzy Gillespie

Artist:Dizzy Gillespie

Song:Manteca

Album:Verve Jazz Masters 10

This comp is from a series of Verve comps. It's a very good introduction to someone like Dizzy Gillespie. He recorded for Verve in the 50s and early 60s. Gillespie was a major innovator as a trumpeter and incorporating Cuban music into bebop. Manteca was a song he co-wrote with Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo. This version of the song is from Gillespie's second major big band. He had already had a successful big band in 1947 and the US State Dept. asked him to put together a tour. The band was so successful it stayed together for two years. This is from the 1957 album Dizzy Gillespie At Newport. It's fabulous music featuring arrangements by Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Tadd Dameron, Benny Golson & Ernie Wilkins. Golson and Billy Mitchell are the lead sax players. Other musicians include Lee Morgan on trumpet, Al Grey on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass and Charlie Persip on drums. So the great thing about a comp like this is once you hear this version of Manteca, you'll want the original album. And Verve has recently released a 50th Anniversary edition of Dizzy Gillespie At Newport. Here's Dizzy Gillespie's Big Band performing Things To Come in 1968.
