Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Jennifer Maia vs Joanne Calderwood

Here's the match video of Jennifer Maia vs Joanne Calderwood from last night's UFC show in Las Vegas. With UFC Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko out with a leg injury, Joanne decided to take this fight instead of waiting around. The opening came up after Viviane Araujo tested positive for COVID-19. Of course it's a risk but Jennifer has proven to be ineffective. She has never finished a fight outside Brazil. I thought the fight would go the distance because neither fighter is a finisher. Joanne is probably better at kickboxing. Joanne catches a kick and takes Jennifer down. Jennifer got wrist control and Joanne wasn't getting anywhere. If Joanne started pounding her after the takedown, that would be one thing. But Jennifer was controlling her wrists and Joanne needed to sense that she should get back to her feet. But she waited too long and Jennifer got her arm. The more Joanne tried to adjust the worse it got and Jennifer turned her over and won with an armbar. So this is where the UFC gets dishonest. Brendan Fitzgerald is told to say that Jennifer has had six submission finishes. This is supposed to build her up as a title challenger. But Jennifer has never had any sort of finish in any of her Invicta or UFC fights. It reminds me of when Valentina submitted Julianna Pena with an armbar. It is to date her only armbar finish. That was a fluke and so is this. It also doesn't make me think that Jennifer could beat Valentina. Sometimes even a blind squirrel finds a nut. One fluke win means nothing. Jennifer needs to show that it isn't a fluke. Enjoy the video!
