AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Ixtahuele

Artist:Ixtahuele

Song:Curitiba Train

Album:Call of the Islands

When I first heard this song, I thought it had been recorded in the 60s. The music and even the album cover seems like a knockoff of exotica legend Martin Denny. It turns out that Ixtahuele is a tribute to Denny. This album was released in 2016. They are from Sweden led by Mattias Uneback. In the video, he's playing the vibraphone. But he also writes and arranges the music and plays keyboards, xylaphone, marimba, glockenspiel and even the theremin which is an obsolete musical instrument that was featured in The Beach Boys' Good Vibrations. Johan Hjalmarsson is a band member and recording engineer. Other members are Carl Turesson Bernhed, Wictor Lind and and Henrik Nilsson. They have released two albums on the Swedish label Subliminal Sounds. There is a market for this kind of lounge or exotica music. It's not a big market and I think it's mostly a nostalgia market for guys like Denny. Capitol has released a series of Exotica albums that have sold well. This is the first time I have heard a contemporary version of exotica. There may be others doing this but I haven't heard it...yet. Last year Uneback released a solo album called Voyage Beneath the Sea. The album is supposed to simulate underwater sounds. So if you like this sort of music, this might be for you. Here's the video for Curitiba Train by Ixtahuele.
