AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Omer Avital

Artist:Omer Avital
Song:New Song
Album:New Song

Bassist Omer Avital was born in Israel but he moved to New York City in 1992. After getting some attention for his club dates, he has become a very popular sideman and he has recorded as a leader since 2001. He was born May 13, 1971 in Givatayim, Israel which is east of Tel Aviv. He studied classical guitar at the Givatayim Conservatory and then switched to bass while attending Thelma Yellin, Israel's high school for the arts. Avital started playing professionally at age 17. And after a year in the Israeli Army Orchestra, he moved to New York City in 1992. Avital played with Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, Nat Adderley and others. He made his recording debut on Antonio Hart's 1993 album For Cannonball & Woody. Then he got a regular gig at Smalls Jazz Club working with pianist Jason Lindner. Avital formed a band with four sax players including guys like Myron Walden, Mark Turner, Gregory Tardy and Joel Frahm. He was featured in the New York Times. This band appeared on the 1997 Impulse Records album Jazz Underground: Live At Smalls. He recorded an album for Impulse but it was never released. He finally released his debut as a leader with the 2001 album Think With Your Heart on the Spanish label Fresh Sound. It featured Walden, Tardy, Frahm, Jimmy Greene and Jay Collins all playing sax. Since then Avital has recorded for Anzic and Sunnyside. New Song is from the 2013 album New Song on Motema Music. Musicians are Avishai E. Cohen on trumpet (not to be confused with bassist Avishai Cohen), Joel Frahm on sax, Yonathan Avishai on piano and Daniel Freedman on drums. He still works regularly as a sideman and he has other bands like the Yes! Trio with pianist Aaron Goldberg and drummer Ali Jackson Jr. He released an album with that band last year. Avital's latest CD New York Paradox was released on the French label Jazz & People. So like many New York jazz musicians, Avital is in demand. Here's Omer Avital performing New Song at the 2013 Nice Jazz Festival. This is the band that appears on the album New Song.
