Album:On The Town: New Broadway Cast Recording
Most classic film fans are familiar with the 1949 film adaptation of the Leonard Bernstein musical On The Town starring Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Jules Munshin as sailors on leave in New York City. My parents went to see that movie on their first date. My mom loved musicals. On The Town was first on Broadway in 1946 and the film only kept four of Bernstein's songs. Most of the songs were written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. This 2014 Broadway revival is based on the 1949 film. It was directed by John Rando who won a Tony for the 2001 show Urinetown. The show ran for a year. The three sailors are played by Tony Yazbeck, Clyde Alves and Jay Armstrong Johnson. Yazbeck was born Mar. 14, 1979 in Riverside, CA. He moved to New York after college and he has appeared in several Broadway musicals like the 2006 revival of A Chorus Line and the 2008 revival of Gypsy. He was nominated for a Tony and won an Astaire award for On The Town. You may have seen him in a recurring role in the Showtime series Billions. He will play Cary Grant in the musical Flying Over Sunset set to premiere in 2021. This show is a fictional account of Grant's experience with LSD. Alves was born Jan. 4, 1980 in Brampton, ON. He first appeared on Broadway in the 2000 revival of The Music Man and the 2003 TV production. He also appeared in Wicked, Hairspray and Bullets over Broadway. Most recently he was in a touring production of Show Boat. Johnson was born Sept. 1, 1987 in Fort Worth, TX. He first appeared in the 2008 touring production of A Chorus Line and then the 2009 Broadway revival of Hair. he has also appeared in Broadway productions of Sweeney Todd, Phantom of the Opera and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. On The Town is his most significant show to date. He also had a recurring role in the ABC TV series Quantico. As I said, this production of On The Town ran for a year so it was very successful.
