Sleepy Sun is an indie band that will be of interest to fans of neo psychedelia. The 2010 album Fever is generally considered to be their best album. The members of Sleepy Sun were all students at UC Santa Cruz when the band was formed in 2005. At first they were called Mania. The lead singer is Bret Constantino along with guitarists Matt Holliman and Evan Reiss, bassist Hubert Guy and drummer Brian Tice. They started out as a garage band and soon became a psychedelic band. They moved to San Francisco. After singer Rachel Fannan joined in 2007, the band name was changed to Sleepy Sun. They saw her performing in a club. After releasing their debut album Embrace in 2008, they signed with ATP Recordings who rereleased it in 2009. Guy was replaced by Jack Allen. Open Eyes is from Sleepy Sun's 2010 album Fever which they recorded in Vancouver with producer Colin Stewart. Then they toured opening for Arctic Monkeys. The album was critically acclaimed but Rachel was unhappy that she wasn't involved in the songwriting. And she also had a drinking problem. So she left. The band claimed that though Rachel was not involved in the songwriting, she was a big part of their live shows. Rachel has been in several bands but she is currently a member of Black Mountain. Sleepy Sun's third album Spine Hits was released in 2012. Then they took a break. Holliman and Reiss formed Fine Points and released an album in 2015. Constantine is a cook when he's not a musician. Tice is a math and physics tutor. Sleepy Sun returned with the 2014 album Maui Tears on the Canadian label Dine Alone. While recording the 2017 album Private Tales, Allen was replaced by Owen Kelley who is a member of Fine Points. They didn't tour and it's not clear if the band is still active. They haven't said anything but they don't seem active to me. Holliman, Reiss and Kelley still have Fine Points and Constantino leads the band Anywhere. On their Facebook page, Sleepy Sun is raising money to do a vinyl pressing of Fever. Here's the video of Open Eyes by Sleepy Sun.
