Artist:Calypso King & The Soul Investigators
Song:Struggling My Way
Album:Soul Strike!
Fans of 70s instrumental funk will want to check out Calypso King & The Soul Investigators. The only thing is this music is not from the 70s and this band is from Finland. When the neo soul and funk label Desco Records closed in 2000, Gabriel Roth started Daptone Records which of course has been very successful. His partner Philippe Lehman started Soul Fire. Lehman was looking for a more raw funk sound. And he found it with Calypso King & The Soul Investigators. They are from Helsinki, Finland. But they sure sound like a 70s funk band like The Meters. After releasing a few singles, the album Soul Strike! was released in 2001. All the musicians are guys who have played in other bands and on sessions. Calypso King & The Soul Investigators released two albums and the musicians have gone on to other things. They still record as The Soul Investigators backing up singers like Nicole Willis, Myron & E and most recently Ernie Hawks. The main guy behind this band is Timmion Records owner Didier Selin. Soul Fire closed in 2003. Soul Strike! is available as a budget CD. Fans of 70s funk should check it out. Here's a video for Struggling My Way by Calypso King & The Soul Investigators.
