The 2013 single Best Day of My Life is to date the only big hit for American Authors. This song appeared on TV so much at the time that I think most music fans heard the song but don't know anything about the band. The members of American Authors met while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2006. Members are Zac Barnett on lead vocals, James Adam Shelley on guitar, Dave Rublin on bass and Matt Sanchez on drums. At first they were called The Blue Pages. They played clubs in Boston and released a few EPs. They moved to Brooklyn, NY in 2010 and the band name was changed to American Authors in 2012. They signed with the management company Dirty Canvas. The company owners Aaron Accetta and Shep Goodman produced all three American Authors albums. They have produced Jordan Knight and Brooke Hogan among others. They signed with Universal's Mercury label but were moved to Island when Mercury was turned into a country label. After releasing an EP, American Authors released their debut album Oh, What a Life in Mar. 2014. Best Day of My Life was the second single. It reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song appeared in a lot of commercials and movie trailers. The most notable of these was a Lowe's commercial that aired during the 2014 Super Bowl. It was also the theme for the Boston Red Sox 2013 World Series victory. And NHL on NBC used it as the theme for the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoff broadcasts. I guess the song appeared on TV so much that it became an earworm. The most notable thing about Best Day of My Life was the prominent use of the banjo. Obviously that isn't an instrument that is normally used in pop music. Barnett said in an interview that the band was experimenting at the time with banjo, mandolin and various percussion instruments. Shelley plays the banjo and tambourine is also featured. The stuttering chorus goes back to Buddy Holly. The album was certified Gold. To date Best Day of My Life is American Authors only chart single. They have released two albums since then and neither performed as well as the first. Their latest album was released last year. I think they need another hit to stay with Island. American Authors could be a one hit wonder. But it's too soon to declare that. Give them a couple more years. Here's the video for Best Day of My Life by American Authors.
