Sax player Ben Wendel is best known as a member of the popular jazz group Kneebody. He has recorded four albums as a leader and is a very busy sideman. He was born Feb. 20, 1976 in Vancouver, BC and he grew up in Santa Monica, CA. His mother is opera singer Dale Franzen. He took piano lessons as a child and started playing sax at age ten. He played sax and bassoon in high school. Wendel studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY and Kneebody was formed there. After graduating, they moved to Los Angeles. Kneebody has been very successful with critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination. Wendel has worked as a sideman with Tigran Hamasyan and Todd Sickafoose and sessions with Good Charlotte and Jason Mraz. One guy he has worked with a lot is producer Alfred "Daedelus" Darlington. They were friends in high school. Wendel has recorded four albums as a leader since 2009. Doubt is from the 2016 album What We Bring on Motema Music. Though Wendel wrote most of the songs on the album, Doubt is from the folk rock duo Wye Oak (Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner). Musicians are Gerald Clayton on piano, Joe Sanders on bass, Henry Cole on drums and Nate Wood on percussion. Wendel's latest album Seasons was released in 2018. Kneebody released the album Chapters in 2019. They continue to be Wendel's main band. And he will continue to record occasionally as a leader when Kneebody isn't recording or touring. Here's the video for Doubt by Ben Wendel with Gerald Clayton, Joe Sanders, Henry Cole and Nate Wood.
