Artist:P.O.D.
Song:Sleeping Awake
Album:Greatest Hits
P.O.D. is a Christian metal band that had success when they signed with Atlantic Records in 2000. Most of their success has been as an album and touring band. Sleeping Awake is one of their more popular songs as it appeared in the 2003 film Matrix Reloaded and was released as a single. P.O.D. is short for Payable on Death. They are from San Diego. They were formed in 1991 when lead singer Sonny Sandoval led a rap act called Unlicensed Product. Guitarist Marcos Curiel, bassist Gabe Portillo and drummer Wuv Bernardo had a thrash metal band called Eschatos but they needed a singer. Sandoval joined the band and it was renamed Payable on Death or P.O.D. for short. The name was suggested by Bernardo's girlfriend who worked in a bank. They released two studio albums and a live album on Rescue Records owned by Bernardo's father and Sandoval's uncle. Bernardo's father was also their manager. Portillo left in 1993 and was replaced by Trea Daniels. After the third album, CCM label Essential Records offered P.O.D. a record deal. They turned it down for a much bigger deal from Atlantic Records. And that's when P.O.D. really started to take off. The 1999 album The Fundamental Elements of Southtown was certified Platinum and the 2001 album Satellite was certified 3XPlatinum without a big hit single. The 2002 single Youth of the Nation reached #28 on the Billboard Hot 100. That is their highest chart single. P.O.D. wrote all the songs. Howard Benson produced most of their Atlantic albums. Curiel was replaced by Jason Truby and that's when P.O.D. was asked to record Sleeping Awake for the 2003 film Matrix Reloaded. It was the lead single. The song was not on P.O.D.'s 2005 album Payable on Death but it is on this budget comp. Things cooled off at Atlantic and P.O.D. left after the 2006 album Testify. Since then they have recorded for INO, Razor & Tie and Universal. They currently record for the Dutch label Mascot and released an album last year. Bernardo went on hiatus in in 2021 and P.O.D. hire drummers for touring. Obviously albums aren't selling like 20 years ago. But P.O.D. is currently on a European tour. That's where the money is though touring is a grind. Here's the video for Sleeping Awake by P.O.D.
