Artist:Katie Dey
Song:Fleas
Album:Flood Network
Katie Dey records music in her home that has gotten a following online. It's not commercial music but it shows that any kind of music can get a following these days. Katie is from Melbourne, Australia and she is autistic. She was messing around with electronic keyboards in her bedroom. She posted songs on her blog. Mat Cochran of the band Elvis Depressedly brought her music to the attention of indie label Orchid Tapes owner Warren Hildebrand and he asked Katie if she wanted to record an album. She agreed because she was a fan of the label. The 2015 album Asdfasdf got a seven out of ten from Pitchfork. And that's how Katie's music has spread. Fleas is from the 2016 album Flood Network on the indie label Joy Void. Then she recorded a couple of albums for the indie label Run for Cover. And she has recorded a couple of albums with Devi McCallion of the Canadian noise pop duo Black Dresses. Katie self released her latest album in 2023. I guess Katie's music might appeal to fans of noise pop or neo psychedelia. Her music has been described as "digitally warped" with "distinctive vocal effects". It's not my kind of music. Look, there are plenty of people recording in bedrooms these days. It's even called "bedroom pop". I don't know if any of it should be released commercially. And I don't think Katie intended to release her music commercially. Someone else thought it was marketable. I don't believe that it is marketable. Decide for yourself. Here's the video for Fleas by Katie Dey.
