Accuradio Song Of The Day-Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn

Artist:Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn

Song:If This World Were Mine

Album:The Essential Luther Vandross

Of course everybody wanted to sing with Luther Vandross. And he recorded plenty of duets. But this 1982 cover of If This World Were Mine appeared on Cheryl Lynn's 1982 album Instant Love. So for Vandross fans, this record is a discography orphan. Fortunately, it's easy to find. Most fans should be familiar with Cheryl Lynn for the 1978 R&B hit Got to Be Real. She recorded several albums for Columbia and that turned out to be her biggest hit. Columbia had her work with producers like Ray Parker Jr. and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. But nothing seemed to work, Vandross had recently signed with Epic and topped the R&B charts with the 1981 single Never Too Much. So they asked him to produce Cheryl's 1982 album Instant Love. If This World Were Mine was written by Marvin Gaye and he recorded it with Tammi Terrell in 1967. It was not a hit. But I'm not surprised that Vandross knew the song. The average fan would not have known about the song. The good news is the single reached #4 on the R&B Singles chart. But it wasn't enough to elevate Cheryl to an elite level. For some reason, Columbia chose not to put the song on a Vandross album. But Luther Vandross fans can get it on this 2CD budget comp. Here's Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn performing If This World Were Mine on Soul Train 1982.
