AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Sydney Chaplin

Artist:Sydney Chaplin w/Barbra Streisand
Song:You Are Woman
Album:Funny Girl: Original Broadway Cast

Most film fans probably know that legendary comic Charles Chaplin had a brother Sydney Chaplin who was also an actor. But Chaplin's son was also named Sydney Chaplin. The son had a pretty good run on Broadway including starring with Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl. He was replaced by Omar Sharif in the film. Then Chaplin went to Hollywood and things didn't go so well. He was born Mar. 30, 1926 in Los Angeles. He was the second son of Charles Chaplin and Lita Grey. They divorced and Chaplin married Oona O'Neil. He and his older brother were raised by Grey's mother. After serving in WWII, Chaplin got into local theater in Los Angeles. His film debut was in his dad's 1952 film Limelight. He appeared in a few films. The most notable of these was the 1955 film Land of the Pharaohs. Then he co-starred with Judy Holiday in the 1956 Broadway musical Bells Are Ringing. Both actors won Tonys. And the show ran for three years. So I guess that was the highlight of Chaplin's acting career. He was replaced by Dean Martin in the film Bells Are Ringing. I guess that's the story of his career. Chaplin appeared in some other Broadway shows. Then he got hired to play Nick Arnstein in Funny Girl. You Are Woman was one of his two songs in the show. Of course Funny Girl made Streisand a star. It did nothing for Chaplin. He moved back to Hollywood and appeared in his dad's 1967 film A Countess From Hong Kong. Other than that, he mostly appeared in B movies and TV. He retired in 1977 and owned the Palm Springs restaurant Chaplin's. He rarely appeared in public. Sydney Chaplin died of a stroke on Mar. 3, 2009 at age 82. Here's a video of You Are Woman by Sydney Chaplin with Barbra Streisand from the Broadway show Funny Girl.
