AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Carly Rae Jepsen

Artist:Carly Rae Jepsen
Song:Call Me Maybe
Album:Kiss

Call Me Maybe was the biggest hit of 2012. It's not my kind of music but I think it's instructive to look at how someone like Carly Rae Jepsen could come out of nowhere like that. I think she was fortunate that the right people got interested in her and the big question about her is career longevity. She was born Nov. 21, 1985 in Mission, BC. She finished third on the 2007 season of Canadian Idol which led to a contract with 604 Records which owned by Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger and his manager Jonathan Simkin who became Carly Rae's manager. Her debut CD Tug Of War was released in Canada by Maple Music in 2008. She didn't have a US record deal at the time. The album was produced by songwriter Ryan Stewart. The album went nowhere but Carly Rae wrote the song Sour Candy with Marianas Trench lead singer Josh Ramsey and he became the producer of her next album. She also toured with Marianas Trench. With her second album Kiss, it was decided that Carly Rae should be more of a pop singer as opposed to a singer songwriter like Colbie Caillat. The single Call Me Maybe was released but like a lot of Canadian Idol contestants, Carly Rae was going nowhere. But when Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were in his home town of Stratford, ON on holidays, they heard Call Me Maybe and Tweeted about it. This got her a deal with Schoolboy Records owned by Bieber's manager Scooter Braun and distributed by Interscope. Call Me Maybe became a worldwide chart topper based on Bieber's Tweets. Think about that for a second. It didn't hurt that the music video made her look much younger than her mid-20s. Carly Rae writes all her songs and she wrote Call Me Maybe with Ramsey and her guitarist Tavish Crowe. It's one of those songs that gets in your head and then you can't get rid of it. This was demonstrated on last week's episode of The Good Wife. Carly Rae had one other top ten hit with Owl City called Good Time. And considering how big Call Me Maybe was, the album Kiss didn't do that well. So is that all she has? Well, her next album was supposed to be released this year. Until that comes out, who knows? She may turn out to be a flash in the pan. At least she can still write songs for others. Here's the video for Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen.
