Jazz pianist Kenny Barron has been around since the 60s. He started out as a sideman and started recording as a leader in the 70s. He was Grammy nominated for the 2016 album Book of Intuition. He was born June 9, 1943 in Philadelphia. His older brother was saxophonist Bill Barron. Barron started playing piano at age 12. On his brother's recommendation, Barron started playing in local clubs with guys like Philly Joe Jones and Jimmy Heath. After moving to New York, Barron made his first recorded appearance on his brother's 1961 album The Tenor Stylings of Bill Barron. He spent the next few years in a band led by Dizzy Gillespie and James Moody. After leaving that band in 1966, Barron started a band with trumpeter Jimmy Owens and they released the album You Had Better Listen on Atlantic. After that album, Barron recorded and toured with Freddie Hubbard for the next few years. Then he signed with Muse Records in 1973 and recorded five albums. He recorded a few albums for Enja in the 80s and was in the Thelonious Monk tribute band Sphere. They recorded for Elektra/Musician and Verve. Barron signed with Verve in 1993 and recorded for Verve and Universal jazz labels EmArcy and Impulse! The 2016 album Book of Intuition was his final album on Impulse!. This album was produced by Universal Music France CEO Jean-Philippe Allard. Musicians are Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums. Barron wrote most of the album songs but Shuffle Boil was written by Thelonious Monk. This album was nominated for a Grammy. Barron released a solo piano album earlier this year. He taught piano at Rutgers for 25 years. Barron currently teaches at Juilliard.
