AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Femi Kuti

Artist:Femi Kuti

Song:Oyimbo

DVD:Live at the Shrine

Femi Kuti is the son of Nigerian music legend Fela Kuti. He carries on his dad's Afrobeat tradition in grand fashion. He was born June 16, 1962 in London, England and he grew up in Lagos, Nigeria with his mother after his parents split up. Then in 1977, he moved in with his father. Kuti learned to play sax and was in his dad's band Egypt 80. He studied at Baptist Academy and Igbobi College in Lagos. Kuti started his own band Positive Force with his dad's keyboard player Dele Sosimi in 1986. The band went to France to play The New Morning in Paris. This got him a record deal with PolyGram and Kuti released his debut album in 1989. After Universal bought PolyGram in 1997, Kuti continued to record for Universal including the Red Hot & Riot tribute album to his dad. He is also a major political activist like his dad. So the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree. Oyimbo is from the 2008 album Day by Day. This was one of several albums that Kuti recorded for the British label Wrasse. It's on Knitting Factory in the US. This album is available as a budget CD. But you can also get Oyimbo on the DVD Live at the Shrine from Chris Blackwell's Palm Pictures. It was also released on CD but the DVD is available at a budget price. Kuti started his own label in 2014 but it doesn't look like anything came from that. His latest album Legacy+ was released in 2021 on Partisan Records. It's a 2CD set with Femi Kuti on one CD and his son Made Kuti on the second CD. Made also sings and plays sax. It's a good way for Femi to pay tribute to his dad and continue to the next generation. Here's Femi Kuti performing Oyimbo from the DVD Live at the Shrine. This video is not on YouTube.
