AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Earl Klugh

Artist:Earl Klugh

Song:Midnight in San Juan

Album:The Best of Earl Klugh

Earl Klugh plays jazz on a classical guitar. And that's one of the reasons he has been popular since the 70s. When Klugh started out in the 70s, he recorded for Blue Note. Then in 1985, he moved to Warner Bros. Why did he switch? His mentor at Blue Note was Dr. George Butler. When Butler left Blue Note for Columbia in 1978 and then Blue Note was sold to EMI, I'm sure that came with new management. It was around this time that Klugh recorded a couple of albums with Bob James. They won a Grammy for One on One. You can be sure that Klugh's status at EMI was something they discussed. When his contract expired, Klugh signed with Warner Bros. His success on the jazz charts continued and he recorded for Warner Bros. until 1997. Midnight in San Juan is from Klugh's 1991 album Midnight in San Juan. Klugh wrote and produced the album. It was arranged and conducted by David Matthews and Don Sebesky who both worked for CTI Records in the 70s. Musicians are Chuck Loeb on guitar, Eliane Elias on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Harvey Mason on drums and Paulinho Da Costa on percussion. Harmonica legend Toots Thielemans is a special guest. The album topped the jazz charts. You can get this song on this comp of Klugh's Warner Bros. recordings. Since leaving Warner Bros., Klugh has recorded for BMG, Koch and Heads Up. His most recent album was released in 2013. He still tours but one would think someone would want to record him. Here's Earl Klugh with Lenny Price on sax, All Duncan and David Spradley on keyboards, Al Turner on bass, Ron Otis on drums and Lorenzo Brown on percussion performing Midnight in San Juan on the 2001 TV special The Jazz Channel Presents Earl Klugh. This is available on DVD and the entire concert can be streamed on YouTube.
