Jimmy Greene is one of today's top jazz saxophonists. His 2014 album Beautiful Life is his best known album as it made the jazz charts and was Grammy nominated. This was his first album after his six year old daughter was murdered in the Sandy Hook shooting. He was born Feb. 24, 1975 in Hartford, CT. His dad played sax. Greene got his first sax when he was six years old. He got into jazz as a teen and his teacher took him to Hartt School of Music to meet legendary jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean. So Greene studied with McLean and after graduating he was runner up in the 1997 Thelonious Monk Competition. Then he moved to New York and played with Horace Silver, Chick Corea and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. And he was in the New Jazz Composers Octet with guys like Gregory Tardy and Myron Walden. Greene made his recording debut as a leader with the 2000 album Brand New World on RCA. Since then Greene has recorded for Criss Cross, Sunnyside and SteepleChase. Meanwhile he moved to Winnipeg to teach at the University of Manitoba. Greene moved back to Connecticut to teach at Western Connecticut State University. That's when his daughter was murdered at Sandy Hook. Seventh Candle is from Greene's 2014 album Beautiful Life. This was his first album for Mack Avenue and his first after his daughter was murdered. The album hit the Billboard Jazz chart and was nominated for two Grammys. Musicians are Renee Rosnes on piano, Christian McBride on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. Guests include pianists Kenny Barron and Cyrus Chestnut, guitarist Pat Metheny and singer Kurt Elling. Greene has recorded three albums for Mack Avenue. His latest the 2020 album While Looking Up is with Lage Lund on guitar, Aaron Goldberg on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass and Kendrick Scott on drums.
