I would describe the Eli Young Band as country rock though most of their success has been on the country music charts with number one hits like Even If It Breaks Your Heart. Lead singer Mike Eli and guitarist James Young were roommates at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX. They started writing together and they performed in local clubs as Eli & Young. They added bassist Jon Jones and drummer Chris Thompson and became Eli Young Band. While opening for Miranda Lambert, they were spotted by her producer Frank Liddell who is married to Lee Ann Womack. After recording a couple of albums on Liddell's label Carnival, they signed with Universal South. The 2008 CD Jet Black & Jealous was their major label debut and the single Always The Love Songs almost cracked the country top ten. A label merger landed Eli Young on Republic Nashville for their 2011 CD Life At Best. My guess is the change got them a better promotion budget. The singles Crazy Girl and Even If It Breaks Your Heart topped the Country Singles chart. Even If It Breaks Your Heart was written by Will Hoge and Eric Paslay. Hoge recorded it on his 2009 CD The Wreckage. He has had modest success as a recording artist. Paslay released his debut CD on Capitol last year and had a top ten country hit with the single Friday Night. The Eli Young Band's 2014 CD 10,000 Towns topped the country charts and the single Drunk Last Night was a top five country hit. They recently released an EP Turn It On and they are currently on tour.
