AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Underworld

Artist:Underworld
Song:Born Slippy .NUXX
Album:Second Toughest In The Infants: Superdeluxe

The Welsh electronic music group Underworld has been around since the 80s. Most of their success has been in clubs and the dance charts. Their biggest hit and most memorable song was this remix of Born Slippy that appeared in the popular 1996 film Trainspotting. Underworld are from Cardiff, Wales. Karl Hyde and Rick Smith started out in 1979 as the Kraftwerk influenced The Screen Gemz. They turned it into the new wave band Freur and released the 1983 album Doot-Doot on CBS. After Freur split up, they reformed as Underworld in 1987 with The Screen Gemz' Alfie Thomas on bass and Bryn Burrows on drums. This was a return to electronic music. They released two albums on Sire and then split up. After a couple of years doing other things, Hyde and Smith reformed Underworld with DJ Darren Emerson and released the 1994 album Dubnobasswithmyheadman. The album did well enough in England that Trainspotting director Danny Boyle wanted to use a couple of songs in the movie. Born Slippy was an instrumental released as a single in 1995. The .NUXX remix added Hyde's vocals and was on the B-side. That's the version Boyle used at the end of Trainspotting. It reached #2 on the British charts. It has been Underworld's biggest hit. If the record seems a little hazy, that's because Hyde was an alcoholic at the time and sang while in a drunken stupor. The Trainspotting soundtrack is available. Underworld added Born Slippy .NUXX to rerelease versions of the 1996 album Second Toughest In The Infants including this 2015 4CD Superdeluxe edition. After Emerson left Underworld in 1999, Hyde and Smith continued as a duo. Underworld continues to record and perform. Along with Danny Boyle, they provided the music for the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremonies. Their latest CD was released in 2016. Hyde and Smith have also recorded solo and continue to work on films and TV with Boyle. Here's the video for Born Slippy .NUXX by Underworld.
