AccuRadio Sing Of The Day-Orchestre Musette "Swing Royale"

Artist:Orchestre Musette "Swing Royale"
Song:Philippe's Stomp
Album:The Rough Guide to Gypsy Swing

The first name that comes to mind when thinking of French Jazz of the 30s is the legendary guitarist Django Reinhart and his legendary cohort violinist Stephane Grappelli. Other musicians seem to get overlooked and forgotten. Though Orchestre Musette "Swing Royale" only recorded a couple of songs in 1940 on the Polydor label, the band members were well known. The musicians are Gus Viseur on accordion, Philippe Brun on trumpet, Maurice Blanc on alto sax, Andre Lluis on clarinet, Jean "Matelo" Ferret on guitar and Mariue Coste on bass. Viseur is probably the best known of these guys. He was a member of Reinhart's Hot Club de France. And after he left he recorded as a leader. He was probably the best known accordionist in France in the 30s. Brun wrote Philippe's Stomp and it was first on one of Viseur's recordings. Brun moved to London in the early 30s to play trumpet with Bert Ambrose's band. He moved back to France to lead his own band. Guitarist Ferret and his brothers were in Reinhart's early 30s band. He became more of a sideman in the mid-30s for Viseur and others. And then he recorded as a leader in the 40s. Clarinetist Lluis was also a sideman for Viseur, Reinhardt and others. I can't say why a new band was formed when Viseur was recording regularly as a leader. But this recording is available on this volume of the Rough Guide series. And maybe check out other recordings by these musicians. Here's a video for Philippe's Stomp by Orchestre Musette "Swing Royale".
