Song:Red Red Wine
Album:This Is Reggae
Most music fans are probably familiar with UB40's 1983 recording of Neil Diamond's Red Red Wine. It was probably their biggest hit and their signature song. But UB40 lead singer Terence "Astro" Wilson told The Financial Times their recording was based on the 1969 reggae version by Tony Tribe. They had no idea that Diamond wrote the song. Unfortunately it was the only significant recording by Tribe because he died in 1970. He was born Anthony Mossop Oct. 9, 1943 in Jamaica and he moved to England with his parents in 1956. He recorded an EP as Tony Mossop and the Soulseekers in 1966 for the British label Herald. Red Red Wine was released in 1969 on the Trojan Records label Downtown. This label was run by Robert Livingstone Thompson who recorded as Dandy Livingstone. The Tony Tribe recording of Red Red Wine became a hit in England. And that's why UB40 was familiar with Red Red Wine. You can get the Tony Tribe recording of Red Red Wine on this various artists budget comp from Music Club. Soon after, Mossop moved to Toronto and released an album as Tony Kingston for the Canadian label Marathon. And then he died in a 1970 car accident. I'm sure some fans know about this recording through the UB40 version. Here's a video for Red Red Wine by Tony Tribe.
