Alexa Grasso vs Carla Esparza added to Sept. 21 UFC show

Carlos Contreras Legaspi of Milenio reported on Saturday that the UFC will return to Mexico City. UFC on ESPN+ 17 will be Sept. 21 at Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City. The first match reported for this show is Alexa Grasso vs Carla Esparza. Carla confirmed this on Instagram. I would be surprised if Alexa was not on this show. She is 25 years old from Guadalajara, Mexico. She trains at Lobo. Her father owns the gym. Her record is 11-2 and 3-2 in the UFC. Alexa is a striker with no power or ground game. She hasn't finished a fight since 2014. She has also had fights cancelled due to injury. Last time out she got a big win over former title contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Like Alexa, Karolina is a points fighter. But Alexa was much quicker and won easily. This is a much tougher fight. Carla is a former UFC Strawweight Champion. She is 31 years old and she trains at Team Oyama in Irvine, CA. Carla was an All American wrestler in college. Since undergoing shoulder surgery a couple of years ago, Carla has had mixed results. But she got a big win last time out over former Invicta Strawweight Champion Virna Jandiroba. Both fighters are looking to get into the title picture. Carla should have the edge of she can take Alexa down. So the result of this fight could depend on Alexa's takedown defence. Regardless, I don't see either of them beating any of the current title contenders like Weili Zhang or the champ Jessica Andrade. And both have already lost to Tatiana Suarez. But if Alexa wins and wins one more fight after this, I guarantee she gets a 2020 Strawweight title shot in Mexico. That would be money down there. I just don't think she's that good.
