AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Portugal. The Man

Artist:Portugal. The Man
Song:Feel It Still
Album:Woodstock

Portugal. The Man were indie music darlings for over a decade before they scored a top five pop hit with Feel It Still in 2017. It seemed to come out of nowhere. And they even won a Grammy. We shall see if the band can sustain that kind of success. Portugal. The Man leader John Gourley and bassist Zach Carothers went to high school together in Wasilia, AK. The band started as a home recording project in 2001 that Gourley turned into a band. Gourley says the band name is supposed to be bigger than any of the members. After recording four albums for indie labels, they signed with Atlantic Records in 2010. And by this time, Portugal. The Man had moved to Portland. The 2017 album Woodstock was their third album for Atlantic. Gourley and Carothers are the only original members. Other members are Zoe Manville on vocals, Kyle O'Quin on keyboards, Eric Howk on lead guitar and Jason Sechrist on drums. Feel It Still was the second single and it reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Apparently Atlantic really wanted Portugal. The Man to cross over to pop. So among other things, they placed the song in several high profile commercials. And the band appeared on Ellen and other shows. The song is based on The Marvelettes classic Please, Mister Postman. The band wrote and produced it with veteran producer John Hill and Asa Taccone of Electric Guest. Hill had produced Portugal. The Man's 2011 album In the Mountain in the Cloud. They won a Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The album was certified Gold. Portugal. The Man is currently touring and I expect them to record new music afterwards. Gotta ride that wave. They may not have another hit like this. Here's the video for Feel It Still by Portugal. The Man.
