Artist:Steely Dan
Song:Black Cow
Album:Gold
The concept of Steely Dan was a rock group for jazz fans. That's because group leaders Walter Becker & Donald Fagen are jazz fans. They originally started Steely Dan with guitarist Denny Diaz as a regular touring rock group. They had a lot of success. But by the time Becker & Fagen were recording the 1977 album Aja, they weren't touring anymore and were using mostly studio musicians on recordings. It didn't seem to matter as Aja is a classic and Black Cow is one of their most memorable songs. Supposedly the song is about Thelonious Monk. I guess this Gold comp is OK for beginners but Universal has yet to release a decent single CD Steely Dan comp. Last year's Definitive Collection isn't much better than Gold. Becker & Fagen had some solo success after splitting up in the early 80s but they reformed Steely Dan and continue to tour and record today. Here's a clip of Walter Becker & Donald Fagen discussing the recording of Black Cow on the Classic Albums show.
