Sounds Of Blackness is a gospel choir from St. Paul, MN that had mainstream crossover success in the early 90s. Like a lot of choirs, they started out as a community choir in the 70s led by musical director Gary Hines. For years they played gigs in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. In 1989, producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis brought Janet Jackson to one of their concerts. She was so enthusiastic that Jam & Lewis immediately signed them to their Perspective/A & M label. So SOB could keep their gospel sound and benefit from the support of a mainstream record label. Their 1991 debut The Evolution Of Gospel did very well on the R & B charts and three singles charted too. All featured the fabulous Ann Nesby on lead vocals. They continued to have success and this 1994 single I Believe did well on the R & B charts. Africa To America was SOB's final CD with Jam & Lewis and Ann Nesby left to go solo in 1996. They're still around but don't record for major labels anymore. They have a new CD out in a couple of weeks. Here's the video for I Believe by Sounds Of Blackness.
