By the time Pet Sounds was released in 1966, Brian Wilson had come off the road and was secluded in his home studio. Though God Only Knows wasn't a big hit at the time, it's turned out to be one of Brian's most enduring songs. Brian originally sang lead on the demo version. And that's the version you hear on this video clip. But Brian decided that brother Carl's falsetto was more suitable and Carl sang lead on the released version. You can get the demo version on the Pet Sounds box set. It's a good example of the kind of complicated vocal arrangements Brian Wilson was interested in at the time. This Made In U.S.A. comp was released by Capitol in 1986 to commemorate The Beach Boys 25th anniversary. It's just one of many Beach Boys comps that are available.
