Artist:James Moody

Song:That Old Black Magic

Versatile sax player James Moody has been around since the late 40s and he's still around today. He was born Mar. 26, 1925 in Savannah, GA and grew up in New Jersey. After serving in the Air Force, he joined Dizzy Gillespie's band in 1946 and has been associated with Gillespie for a good part of his career. Like Gillespie, he likes to sing and is best known for his reworking of I'm In The Mood For Love known as Moody's Mood For Love. It was a best seller for King Pleasure. Moody plays all different saxes and flute. He would occasionally lead his own band but always returned to Gillespie afterwards. He also worked in Las Vegas show bands in the 70s. The 1996 CD Young At Heart is a tribute to Frank Sinatra. That Old Black Magic is with a smaller band including Mulgrew Miller on piano, Todd Coolman on bass and Billy Drummond on drums but he also plays with an orchestra. Gil Goldstein is the producer/arranger. James Moody still tours today. His most recent CD is 2004's Homage on Savoy Jazz. Here's James Moody with guitarist Jack Petersen in 1989.
